Proximity Plumbing is a plumbing business operating across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and the areas around them — pipe relining, blocked drains, emergency call-outs, leak detection, gas fitting, and the rest of a full trade offering.

Local trade search is one of the more competitive spaces there is. A business like this is not trying to rank once; it is trying to be the answer for each service in each suburb it covers, which is a combinatorial problem rather than a page-count problem.

William approached us in June 2020. There was already a website. It was not the absence of one that was holding the business back, it was the shape of it: content that had no structure local search could read, page speed that was not where it needed to be, and an architecture that had not been built with any of this in mind.

The hard part of this project was not designing a new site. It was restructuring an existing one, and moving everything that was already there into a shape it was never organised for, without losing what the business had already accumulated.

A service-and-suburb architecture multiplies quickly. Every service the business offers, across every area it covers, is a page that has to be genuinely distinct, correctly interlinked, and reachable — and that structure has to hold as services and coverage areas change. Generated at scale and left there, that kind of architecture becomes thin and works against the site rather than for it.

Page speed carried its own weight. Trade searches are overwhelmingly made on a phone, often urgently, and a slow page in an emergency call-out category is a lost job rather than a soft metric.

We treated the service and suburb combination as the organising principle of the site rather than as pages bolted onto an existing structure. That decision came first, because it determines the URL structure, the internal linking, and the migration — and all three are expensive to change afterwards.

The division of labour has been clear from the start and has not moved in five years. We own the technical and on-page side: how the site is structured, the markup, how images are handled, how quickly pages render. Their SEO team owns the content and the campaigns. We do not write their content and we do not run their search strategy.

That boundary is worth stating plainly, because the results below belong to both sides of it.

A marketing website built to the structural standards usually reserved for larger systems: a deliberate information architecture, a page system that covers the service and area matrix coherently, and rendering performance held to a standard rather than checked once at launch.

The migration was the substantial piece of work. Everything the business had already published had to arrive inside the new structure correctly, with its URLs handled properly, rather than being abandoned in favour of a clean start.

The engagement has since extended beyond the primary business site to further websites for the same client.
