Petico is the largest online pet care retailer in Malaysia, selling across Southeast Asia. At that position in a market, the platform stops being a storefront and becomes the system the business runs on.

Our work has been on the platform side of that: the systems that carry the catalogue, the ordering process, and the operational work that follows an order.

Retail platforms rarely fail at launch. They fail later, when three things grow at the same time: the number of products, the number of orders, and the number of operational exceptions that neither of the first two accounted for.

A platform built for the catalogue and volume a business has today will meet each of those growth curves as a separate emergency. The engineering question is not whether the store works — it is whether the structure underneath it can absorb growth without being rebuilt.

We treated the platform as operational infrastructure rather than as a website. That means designing for the state the business will be in, keeping the parts that change most often separable from the parts that should stay stable, and making sure operational edge cases have somewhere to live in the system instead of being handled outside it.

It also means staying with the platform. Retail systems accumulate requirements continuously, and a platform only stays coherent if someone is responsible for it after launch.
