Project Overview

Comfy Workers provides accommodation for working people on short- and long-term assignments across the UK. When the founding team approached us, the business existed as a clear commercial idea and no software at all.

We were engaged at that point — before there was a specification to build against. The first deliverable was a working software prototype: something the team could operate and put in front of stakeholders, rather than a document describing what might eventually be built.

The Challenge

Starting from a concept rather than a requirements document changes the shape of the problem. There was nothing to estimate against, no existing system to migrate from, and no settled model for how properties, assignments, and occupancy should relate to one another.

The risk in that situation is building the wrong thing thoroughly. A polished platform engineered against assumptions that turn out to be wrong costs more to correct than no platform at all — and the assumptions are hardest to test precisely when there is nothing running yet.

How We Worked

We sequenced the engagement so each stage produced something the client could judge before the next stage committed effort to it. Nothing was specified in the abstract.

The prototype came first and answered the structural questions. The designs and module specification followed, written against a system that already existed and behaved. Only then did the production build begin.

What We Built

The platform covers the accommodation side of the business end to end: the properties available, the assignments they are booked against, and the operational workflow that sits between the two.

It was specified to be extended. Each module was defined as a distinct unit of behaviour, which is what has since allowed new requirements to be absorbed by extending existing modules rather than unpicking earlier work.
